How it works
Everything a calorie counter makes you do, you do by just saying it. Basil writes your food diary for you, and tells you what each estimate is based on.
The way you'd tell a friend. Portions, brands and “a big bowl” all count.

Foods, portions and the assumptions behind each estimate. Barcodes and labels work too.
“That was a double.” “Delete the yogurt.” “Log yesterday's dinner.” Done.
Ideas for a cut, weight gain or your macro goals. Just ask.
A general AI chat can guess what's in a meal, but it doesn't stick around. Basil keeps your food diary, your plan and your progress, remembers you between chats, and does the work with them.
Every meal lands in a food diary on your phone, with the day's estimated calories, macros and protein added up.
Ask what to order. Basil can search restaurant menus, check nutrition sources and put the options in the context of your day.
Your usual lunch. The milk you prefer. Your food preferences and what you're working toward. Basil keeps useful details so each conversation can build on the last.
Connect Apple Health or Health Connect to bring weigh-ins, activity and sleep into the conversation. You choose what to share.
About 880 kcal of room for dinner. Protein is the one to lean into tonight.

Your food diary
Your meals, estimated calories, macros and protein, all in one food diary. See how the day adds up against the targets you and Basil chose, whether you're eating for weight loss, weight gain or maintenance.
Basil starts the conversation, too
A missed log. A tough week you mentioned. A pattern worth talking about. Turn on check-ins and Basil reaches out only when your food diary gives it something real to say.
Hey, you mentioned Tuesdays get hectic. No lunch logged yet. Want to catch me up?
Your goals. Your plan.
Weight loss, weight gain, maintenance or specific macro goals: tell Basil what you're working toward. It starts from published energy equations, then checks what you log against your weight trend to learn how much your body actually burns, and refines your plan with you week by week.

Healthy habits, for the long run
Takeout, holidays, a drink with friends. Your plan has to work in the middle of real life. Basil helps you work on habits around food, alcohol and everyday routines, one manageable change at a time.
No crash diets. No starting over every Monday.
Ask for help planning a night out, cutting back on drinks, or getting back to your routine after a messy week. The aim is healthy habits you can keep, with support when things get hard.
A little pushback. A practical next step. Room to be human.
Privacy
Your journal stays on your phone by default, and the AI that answers you never trains on what you send it. Where there's a limit, we say so plainly rather than make a promise we can't keep.
Nothing reaches the AI until you've agreed to what Basil sends. Take it back any time with Stop sharing with the AI in Settings.
The no-training rule isn't a setting you have to find. Our server adds it to every request, so it only reaches providers that don't train on inputs.
To reply, Basil sends AI providers, through OpenRouter, your messages and photos, recent chat, your plan and latest measurements, health data you've connected, what it remembers about you, and the journal entries it reads to answer. Check-ins you turn on also send recent meals and totals. The rest of your journal stays put.
Apple Health and Health Connect need their own yes. Basil only reads, never writes back, and Disconnect deletes what it imported from Basil.
Usage stats tell us which features get used. They never include your conversations, photos, food, or health readings.
Google may keep the requests it answers, and its responses, for up to 55 days, only to detect abuse and meet legal obligations, and never for training.
