Basil vs a general AI chat
Why not just use ChatGPT?
A general AI chat is good at estimating what's in a meal, and plenty of people start there. Basil is an AI calorie coach built only for this job, so the estimate is the start of the work, not the end of it.
What can ChatGPT already do?
ChatGPT can remember preferences and details from your chats, though OpenAI notes memory “does not retain every detail from every conversation.” Health in ChatGPT can connect Apple Health on an iPhone for logged-in adults in the US, and it can see a nutrition app's data that syncs to Apple Health. Scheduled tasks can send you reminders you set up.
What does Basil do that a general chat doesn't set out to?
Every meal you mention becomes an entry in a food diary on your phone, with the day's estimated calories, macros and protein added up and a Journal you can scroll back through. Fixing one is a sentence: “that was a double.”
Your calorie and protein targets are worked out in code from published equations rather than guessed in the moment, and Weekly Reviews compare your weight trend with the plan before suggesting a change you approve.
Basil checks in only when your journal gives it something real to say, remembers your routine, and syncs weigh-ins from Apple Health or Health Connect on Android.
Do I need an account?
No. Basil has no sign-in, and the journal is stored on your phone. The Privacy Policy says exactly what is sent to answer you.
When is a general chat enough?
If you want a one-off estimate for a meal, a general chat can do that. Basil is for people who want the logging, the totals and the plan to keep going without doing the bookkeeping themselves.
